Food journalist Corby Kummer (yes, that's his real name, not his porn name, which would probably be Cornhole Kummer) writes in the May issue of
The Atlantic of "budding locavores." I've already established my
foodie creds, but I'm not a drooling fan of the "locavore" movement.
It reminds me too much of my time as a U.C. Berkeley undergrad and my strident veggie years. I refused to eat meat back then, but I would consume "mock" tofu chicken at the local veggie Chinese food restaurant. (I certainly didn't have the moo-lah then to partake of Alice Waters's budding foodie movement at her iconic
Chez Panisse in Berkeley.) I do have to hand it (not hoof it) to my vegetarian diet that when I was in graduate school in London I never ate beef, which later caused much consternation over mad-cow disease.
I may have dodged the BSE prion, but the budding locavore disease is seemingly omnipresent. Let's not get crazy about eating local foods, folks. As Earth Day approaches, we need to be cognizant of our personal impact on the planet. Eating local is fine. But let's not go loco to the point of losing our minds.
